The Bar Council of the Maldives Announces Top Scorers of Bar Exam 2023

The Bar Council of the Maldives announced the results of the Bar Exam 2023 this Sunday, revealing a mixed picture of achievement and a slight decrease in overall performance compared to 2022. While 68% of candidates passed the Exam last year, 2023 saw a pass rate of 66%. Notably, the number of applicants also decreased, with 149 participants in 2023 compared to 179 in 2022.

The announcement highlighted the outstanding performances of five top scorers. Four of them being graduates of Maldives National University (MNU) and one graduate from University of Reading.

The results also revealed that 89% of successful candidates held degrees from Maldivian universities, reflecting the strong presence of local talent within the legal sphere. While graduates from Maldives National University (MNU) and Villa College consistently occupy the highest positions, the continued absence of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) students among the top scorers for two consecutive years raises questions about potential factors influencing this disparity. Analyzing IUM’s curriculum, student demographics, and Bar Exam performance data could uncover insights and inform future program improvements.

We at Maldives Law Weekly extend our congratulations to all successful candidates
