RAISE THE BAR | First Bar Conference

The very first Bar Conference of the Bar Council of the Maldives, “Raise The Bar,” was held on 10th-11th October 2022 at Meerumaa events.

The conference commenced with the keynote address by former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munavvar. In his speech, Dr. Munavvar highlighted that law as a profession was discouraged in the early 70s and 80s. He also stated the progress the law profession has made over the years. Dr. Munavvar also shed some light on the history of the legal fraternity.

Speaking to the fraternity, the Chief Guest of the conference, Hon. Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan advised the fraternity to study continuously as the law constantly evolves and develops. He noted the importance of knowing the history and recognizing the work of lawyers who contributed to the profession highly. Hon. Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan also acknowledged the contribution of the lawyers to the tourism sector.

Following was the speech from the First President of the Bar Council of the Maldives, Uz. Maumoon Hameed. In his remarks, the Former President urged all to use this conference to raise concerns and set policies. He congratulated the current Executive Committee and the Bar Council of the Maldives secretariat for organizing such an ambitious and successful conference.

The two-day conference was conducted in 4 sessions focusing on Bar Exam & Licensing Standards, Lawyer Ethics and Discipline, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) & Member Subscription Regimes, and Legal Profession Act (LPA) Reform. The conference ended with passionate and ambitious ideas shared by participants. The conference concluded with a word of thanks from the President of the Bar Council of the Maldives, Uz. Ismail Wisham.
