Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir Under Investigation by Judicial Service Commission

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened an investigation against Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir.

In the statement released by the JSC, the investigation was initiated regarding a complaint, that Justice Mahaz accepted a meal sent to the Supreme Court by a supporter of an appellant in celebration of the ruling of a case.

Justice Mahaz was quick to deny the allegations. In a statement shared by Justice on various social media platforms stated that, since the hearings of case took a long time, three Justices that heard the case took turns at buying lunch for the Justices. And since 30th November 2021 was his turn and the last day the three Justices would meet before the recess he bought the food.

He also stated that the other two Justices enjoyed the food and was aware where the food came from. All the arrangements for the next days regarding the hearing, including the food was finalized on the night before.

A statement was later released by JSC stating that despite repeated letters to the Supreme Court seeking clarification on the complaint, he repeatedly refused to clarify information about the dinner, except to say that there was a dinner on the same day. And that he did not respond to requests for details of how the dinner was organized and how it was funded. And that should be noted that the judge did not disclose the information at that time and whether the information and documents were in the hands of the judge at that time will become more clear only after the commission completes its investigation.
